Short answer

Flow-through fish farm is a fish farm format designed for a specific site, water source, production capacity and target market. The pool layout, water treatment, oxygen system, automation and auxiliary zones are calculated together, not selected as unrelated equipment. Flow-through farming works when a stable high-quality water source can provide the required flow, temperature and safe discharge conditions.

Briefly about technology

What is a straight-through farm

A flow farm is a farm where water flows continuously from a source, passes through basins or growing channels, and is discharged. Unlike RAS, water does not circulate in a closed circle - it is used once.

Simplicity - in the right place

The main advantage of direct flow is its relative technological simplicity. But it only works with a stable water source.

Critical Parameters

Flow rate, temperature, oxygen, water quality and the possibility of legal discharge. If at least one is not suitable, the project becomes more expensive.

Where is it used?

Trout - in cold, clean reservoirs, sturgeon - in rivers and lakes, warm-water species - in cooling canals.

What is included in the project

Composition of a once-through farm

The farm is assembled from functional blocks. The specific content of each depends on the water and type of fish.

Water intake and water supply

  • Water intake unit — river/canal/well/spring, gratings and protection from debris
  • Pumping station - if there is no gravity flow - pumps, redundancy, fittings
  • Accounting and regulation unit — flow meters, valves, collectors

Inlet water treatment

  • Mechanical filtration - gratings, mesh, sand/disc - over water
  • Aeration/oxygenation — aerators, injectors, oxygen station
  • Disinfection — UV, sometimes ozone — for “living” water
  • Special water treatment — deferrization, degassing, softening

Fish hatchery block

  • Pools, flumes or channels — lines by age and weight
  • Water distribution unit — uniform flow along the lines
  • Sorting and transfers - work area, equipment
  • Feeding - warehouse and automatic feeders

Water collection and discharge

  • Collection channel/collector — after the pools
  • Sludge and wastewater treatment - settling tanks, sludge storage tank
  • Sludge disposal — collection of flushing and bottom sediments

Pre-sale preparation

  • Exposure and stabilization

What is included in a turnkey flow-through fish farm?

A typical scope includes technology design, tanks or pools, mechanical and biological filtration, pumps, oxygen supply, automation, piping, installation, commissioning and launch support.

Can the farm be adapted to an existing building?

Yes. Before design, the building is checked for area, height, floor loads, water supply, drainage, ventilation, power capacity and convenient equipment maintenance.

What data is needed to calculate the farm?

The first calculation needs the fish species, target capacity, growth stage, available site or building data, water analysis, climate conditions and investment range.
